Introducing: The Zip Cart
Roof Equipment LLC has taken the labor-saving aspects of CAV-GRIP 3V to the next level with their newly developed, patent pending 5’ wide and 10’ wide spray carts, named the Zip Cart™. To gain a better perspective on the advantages of this technology, we sat down with owner of Midstate Roofing & Coating Inc, Ben Hartlzer, who was the first contractor to put the 5’ wide Zip Cart to the test.
Ryan: How long have your roofing crews been using a Zip Cart?
Ben: We’ve been using the Zip Cart since June 2019.
Ryan: How often do they use the Zip Cart? Is it on every job, or just wide-open jobs?
Ben: We use it on most of our jobs. The general rule is that if it’s at least 60 squares and less than 5 curbs, it’s worth taking up on the roof.
Ryan: What has this done for your rooftop productivity and employee morale?
Ben: Applying the adhesive takes about 1/5 of the time compared to hand-spraying. Employees even tend to use the cart for small areas where they could easily hand spray with a CAV-GRIP 3V tank and gun assembly.
Ryan: How much more competitive are fully adhered systems utilizing this technology?
Ben: With this machine, our man-hours per square when installing a fully adhered system is comparable to mechanically attached systems.
Ryan: What is their typical maintenance program to keep a Zip Cart functioning?
Ben: If the fluid system remains pressurized, there is no maintenance except peeling the dry glue off the nozzles every morning prior to starting. If you are adhering a large area (50+ squares), you may need to stop and remove glue buildup from the nozzle tips.
Ryan: Whether at a distributor's shop or on the jobsite, CAV-GRIP 3V should ALWAYS be stored in protected, heated spaces with the temperature maintained above 70°F (21°C). With that in mind, what is the best way to keep material warm during use in a Zip Cart?
Ben: We use a 4’x4’ Power Blanket Hot Box to keep the entire cart warm prior to use.
Ryan: How do they typically transport the Zip Cart to and from jobs?
Ben: The 5’ cart and 10’ cart will both fit inside a standard pick up bed.
