Paper Faced vs Coated Glass Faced Polyiso
“You’re an insulation guy. What type of insulation would you use if you were the building owner?”
This is how many architects and building owners start a conversation with me. As the insulation product specialist for Versico Roofing Systems, knowing all things insulation is my job. Couple that with the fact that I have inspected over 1,000 roofs earlier in my career, and I feel adequately prepared to answer this question.
There are two predominant facers used on polyiso for commercial roofing: glass-reinforced felt (GRF) facers and coated glass facers (CGF). GRF is comprised of recycled paper with a small amount of glass reinforcement. It is compatible with all adhesives, all single-ply membranes, and it is the low-cost leader. However, GRF faced polyiso is not the performance leader. CGF facers provide exceptional resistance to moisture and mold, increased wind uplift resistance, and increased fire performance. Polyiso with CGF facers are a superior product.
If I was a building owner, I would require CGF polyiso to be used in all of my roofing systems without question. I’m not one to be afraid of spending more money for higher quality products, so long as those products demonstrate a tangible increase in performance. If I’m going to shell out some cash for a new roof, I will be purchasing high-performing CGF polyiso. Versico’s SecurShield polyiso line incorporate CGF facers on all products.
